Sustainable Interiors Trends for 2021

Sustainable Interiors Trends for 2021

The pandemic has changed the way we live as many of us have become more conscious of our consumerism and are shopping more responsibly than ever. These consumer habits have further shaped the interior design trends leading the way for 2021.

Below is our roundup of the most promising sustainable trends that we hope are here to stay!:

Reusing and repurposing

Many of us are finding satisfaction in giving old, disused objects a new lease of life. There seems to be no limit to creativity when it comes to repurposing. Colanders have been made into pendant lights and planters. It's an ingenious way to fill time, test your creativity levels and to save money.

Indoor-outdoor living

We've had to endure enough of the indoors during 2020 so this year, the outdoors will be finding their way into our homes. Plants are set to be more popular than ever as we aim to increase the air quality in our living spaces and expect to see many extensions with Bi-fold doors to maximise indoor-outdoor living.

Sustainable materials

New research by Roofing Megastore reveals UK homeowners are increasingly opting for more eco-friendly building materials. The study analysed Google search data over the past two years for different building materials and construction methods to uncover which have seen the biggest increases in interest over time. With materials such as synthetic slate roof tiles and bamboo reinforced concrete becoming more accessible, we won't just be seeing these featured on the latest on Grand Designs episode. And this is hopefully a trend that is here for the longterm with the government’s £134m pledge to build back better.

Smart tech

According to the winner of the International Interior Designer of the Year, Ben Wu, technology will further enhance the friendliness of our homes.

'In 2021, diversity and globalisation will go hand in hand. Future technology like 5G will take place more and more in the home design'

One of the innovative features of future smart homes is "home zoning" where you can set different temperatures with energy efficient, smart thermostats to meet your room's different needs. This will be in line with the government's plan to ban gas boilers in new houses by the mid-2030s.
