Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period.

Ukiyo-e artists specialise in creating woodblock prints, a traditional form of Japanese art that flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868). Ukiyo-e literally translates to "pictures of the floating world" and was a popular art form that depicted the everyday life and culture of the common people.

Ukiyo-e artists typically worked in collaboration with publishers and other artisans to create prints using a multi-step process. The artist would first create a design, which would then be carved onto blocks of wood by a skilled craftsman. Ink would be applied to the blocks, and the paper would be pressed onto them, resulting in a print that could be reproduced multiple times.

Kunisada was one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e tradition. His works became immensely popular, making him one of the most prolific and successful ukiyo-e artists of his time.
